These programs are all freely downloadable from the web for PC users. There is no equivalent Mac software for GeneDoc, but the other two programs have Mac versions.
[Note: Not all web browsers allow files to be saved as real plain text files. Check to make sure that your browser has this ability prior to doing the Part B of exercise 3. So far the best browser we have found for this purpose is Mozilla. Also note that there are a number of png images in this material. IE users will need to download a plugin in order to see these images.
[Note: Chimera is available for Mac OSX [10.2 or 10.3] and needs to have an X server running on the box. The recommended operating system is 10.3 coupled with Apple's X server X11. The X11 software for OS 10.2 is no longer available from Apple. The current set of exercises using Chimera expects a user to be working with release 1.1700 or later of the software. This version was released at the end of March 2003. Release 1.1872 of Chimera that works with Mac OS 10.3 was released in Oct/Nov 2003.
Files will need to be saved to your local machine and worked with throughout the exercises. Organizing these files in a single location will help in finding materials needed later on. Being able to print these saved files helps as well.
To make working through the exercises easier PDF versions of the various exercises and their help guides are now available to download.
